This article is an attempt to instigate the importance of values “Soft skills” along with “degrees the so called hard skills. Work values are the subset of our beliefs and ideas that are related to occupation or job. These core principles are an important part of who we are. They include things like honesty, service, self-respect, respect for others, peace, and success. Therefore, one must identify what work values we should be having. Work Values can be Intrinsic and extrinsic .Every individual posses both intrinsic and extrinsic values.
Intrinsic values are the ones which are directly involved in practicing a job like mentoring your colleagues, taking up new and challenging jobs and accomplishing it with determination and dedication.
Extrinsic values are by products of job. What one actually gets out of a job like salary, recognition, job security etc.
Now the question that arises is why are values important? In today’s world, every employer seeks to have an employee who is a multitasked. That is, the employee should be able to handle job which requires multiple skills.
Multiple skills incorporate soft skills like: Leadership Skills. Companies want employees who can supervise and direct other workers. …Teamwork. …Communication Skills. …Problem Solving Skills. …Work Ethic. …Flexibility/Adaptability. …Interpersonal Skills also hard skills like
Hard skills like : Proficiency in language, Degree certificate, Machine operation computer skill etc.
In performing their job there are various decisions which the employees have to take up which are instant in nature. . Which is their own. These decisions that the employees take up should be correct ethically, principled and right minded both as an individual and institution.
When we are required to take decision we analyze the situation, think, our thoughts become words and words become action. This action has to be morally, ethically correct even in the absence of employer. The decisions we take are a reflection of our values and beliefs, and they are always directed towards a specific purpose. Thus every employer would employ people based not only on merit but also the ethical requirement which consists of various life skills.
How important are our values canbe made clear via example of employees of hotel Taj Mumbai.
A Values-Driven Recruitment System
The Taj Group’s three-pronged recruiting system helps to identify people it can train to be customer-centric. Unlike other companies that recruit mainly from India’s metropolitan areas, the chain hires most of its frontline staff from smaller cities and towns such as Pune (not Mumbai); Chandigarh and Dehradun (not Delhi); Trichirappalli and Coimbatore (not Chennai); Mysore and Manipal (not Bangalore); and Haldia (not Calcutta). According to senior executives, the rationale is neither the larger size of the labor pool outside the big cities nor the desire to reduce salary costs, although both may be additional benefits. The Taj Group prefers to go into the hinterland because that’s where traditional Indian values—such as respect for elders and teachers, humility, consideration of others, discipline, and honesty—still hold sway. In the cities, by contrast, youngsters are increasingly driven by money, are happy to cut corners, and are unlikely to be loyal to the company or empathetic with customers.
