10 Ways to Get Out of Depression

Anyone can be overcome by depression, but getting out of it? Well, that’s an ordeal.

There might be many, many, many ways to cure depression, you can read self-help books, watch inspiring movies, or consult experts, but here are the ten ways that I observed to work quickly.

  1. Acceptance

Some people might tell you that maybe you didn’t put in a lot of efforts for something, and that’s why you failed and that’s why you’re facing depression. Maybe, they’re right.

I’m not saying that we’re inadequate, but it is possible that we might have done something wrong or made a mistake somewhere.

Well, accept it. Because the sooner you do, the sooner you’ll get the strength to deal with it.

Or you can stay in utter denial.

2. Believe

After acceptance, comes belief. You have to believe that good things are coming your way. But that doesn’t mean you always ‘go with the flow’ or stop trying or tolerate injustice.

Take a look at Voltaire’s satirical novella, Candide. The book is based on the idea that All is for the best, in the ‘best of all possible worlds.’ Voltaire ridicules this G. W. Leibniz belief through Candide.

Voltaire concludes with a rather practical percept that ‘we must cultivate our garden.’

So you cannot really sit back and think- All is for the best, always. You have to work to make all for the best; it won’t happen overnight, but believe that it will happen.

3. Don’t be afraid to do it again

Love broke your heart? Well, be careful next time, don’t give up, she might be just around the corner.

Failed that exam? Well, I have a friend who is studying CA (Chartered Accountant), need I say more? For those less familiar with CA exams, let me tell you my friend has given more than 6 attempts for the same exam.

Be hopeful. Be bright, and don’t give up. Remember, you have to fight for what you want.

4. Start writing

Write how you feel, write all the things that come to your mind. This will calm your mind and untangle the chaos of thoughts.

Also, it will help you sort out your emotions so that you are better able to understand how you feel about certain things.

Start reading self-help books, some Brene Brown with breakfast will do wonders. Watch Ted talks, or hey, shoot one! Either way, keep busy, do something new.

5. Start cooking

Believe it or not, cooking helps. Eating appetizing food will help you feel better, I’m not making it up; it is just psychology.

It’s a great way to pass time and also fill your stomach side by side!

Enhance your taste buds because the sooner you eat better, you’ll feel better.

6. When overwhelmed, run. Or walk. Or take a long drive alone

It might help you to calm down. Without any destination, there is no pressure to reach anywhere. The roads without destination often prove to be beneficial (especially with a little upbeat music in the background).

I personally love to run when overwhelmed. So, if you’re overwhelmed, try running.

7. Meditate/Exercise/Gym

Meditation and yoga will assist your mind and body.

Mental depression and physical depression are two different things – physical depression involves a lethargic body whereas mental depression involves a tired mind. Figure out, which type of depression you have and get going.

8. Start taking efforts to perform your hobbies

Take out some time from your not-so-busy schedule, and relentlessly take efforts to enjoy your hobby. It might seem like you are forcing yourself to find happiness in the task, but remember why it was your hobby in the first place- it bequeathed you with happiness. So find that lost happiness, it may take time but you’ll get there.

9.Watch movies

Especially animated movies – they’re funny and moral-full. Animated TV series (my personal favorite- Family Guy) will also do wonders to your humor.

You might start finding the not-so-funny things extremely funny. (And we certainly have lost all laughter in this satirical sarcastic world).

10. Feel good

Be around people who like you for being yourself, however reader, don’t misunderstand me, being yourself doesn’t imply that you stop trying to be a better version of yourself.

You can make yourselves feel the gratitude for a normal, healthy life by visiting an orphanage.

When in depression, do things that make you count your blessings, teach to the under privileged, participate in food drives, just feel good!

Do not let the smoking, the drugs, the alcohol influence you, it will numb your mind and body for the time being but it WILL NOT HEAL YOU.

The same goes for dating in jeopardy or a string of one night stands- it is not going to fill that void in your heart, it will only leave you feeling numb and despicable about yourselves the next morning.

Let us fight depression by learning to love ourselves again!
