The festival of Eid is celebrated to mark the end of Ramadan. Eid is popularly known as Eid ul-fitr. This auspicious festival is observed by the Muslim community throughout the world. Eid is an Arabic term which means “festivity” or “celebration” & fitr means “to break the fast”. Thus the meaning of Eid ul-fitr is the festival of breaking fast. They follow the Islamic Hijri calendar , where the followers offer Eid prayers in mosques on the 1st day of the tenth month.(Shawwal)
Ramadan also known as Ramzan is the ninth month of the hijri calendar. People observe fast(Roza) during this month from dawn to dusk. They refrain from having any type of food, drinking liquids during roza. Muslims also abstain from negative or evil behavior that may negate the reward of fasting. Iftar is the evening meal with which they break their daily ramzan fast.
Muslims start gearing up for the celebration of Eid during the month of Ramzan with great joy. The Eid festivities begin after the sighting of crescent moon. People dress up in new clothes on this day and they break their fast just after the sunrise & before attending the prayer. After that they gather in a mosque or in an open field for the Eid prayer. Worshippers embrace each other and say Eid Mubarak to each other after the prayer is completed.
Special sweets and traditional food is cooked for the celebration of Eid. It is a time when people visit their friends ,relatives and take blessings from the elder people. Adults usually give children and young people gifts on this day. Zakl al-fitr , a duty to give the poor is followed by every muslim who has the means to do so on this day.
